we partnered with The City of Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara Public Library to issue a call for public art “Tiny Libraries.”

the winning proposal, by artist douglas lochner, will exhibit on the State Street corridor from august through october 2019.

Lochner is designing and fabricating 6 bright, life-sized, functional art “libraries” in the shape of punctuation marks.

The Santa Barbara Public Library will curate the tiny libraries with books and contribute corresponding programming on State Street, such as readings, lectures and scavenger hunts with librarians. the books will be free to the public, and individuals may also leave books in the libraries to donate to other readers.

This project is generously underwritten by the City of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Beautiful, Downtown Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation.

the Santa Barbara Education Foundation is a partner for this project.
